Hardik Patel’s parents moved to Viramgam in 2004. Hardik Patel studied in classes VI to VIII at Divya Jyot School in Viramgam, before moving to KB Shah Vinay Mandir, where he studied till class XII.

Hardik Patel was a poor student and cricket lover. After completing class XII, Hardik Patel started helping his father Bharat run a small business of installing submersible pumps in underground water wells. Bharat was a Congress worker.

Hardik Patel took admission in Sahajanand College, Ahmedabad in 2010. He ran for the post of General Secretary of the College Students Union and was elected unopposed. Hardik Patel received his Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree in 2013.

Hardik Patel joined the Sardar Patel Group (SPG), a Patidar youth body, on 31 October 2012, and within less than a month, became the president of its Viramgam unit. Hardik Patel was removed from his post in 2015, following a conflict with the SPG with their leader Lalji Patel. In July 2015, Patel’s sister, Monica, failed to qualify for a state government scholarship.

Hardik Patel was upset when Monika’s friend qualified for the same scholarship through the Other Backward Classes (OBC) quota, even though she had scored lesser marks. Recognizing that positive policies were benefiting other castes but not Patidars, Patel formed the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), which claims itself as a non-political organization, The aim is to include Patidars in the OBC quota.

Hardik Patel met former Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav in Bhopal in 2018. Hardik Patel led the Patidar Reservation Movement from July 2015, with the support of PAAS.

Hardik Patel organized several rallies across Gujarat. On 25 August 2015, a large number of Patidars from all over Gujarat gathered at the GMDC ground in Ahmedabad for a rally. That evening, he was briefly arrested by the Ahmedabad City Police after he had gone on a hunger strike after a rally organized earlier in the day was dispersed. In response, violent protests broke out, forcing the Gujarat state government to impose a curfew and call in the Indian Army.

He continues to lead the movement. Hardik Patel was arrested again on 18 January 2020 for failing to appear before a trial court here in the 2015 sedition case, hours after the warrant was issued against him.
