Umer Shareef started his career as a stage performer from Karachi in 1974, at the age of 14. He joined the theatre, using the stage name Omar Zarif, but later changed its name to Omar Sharif. Some of his extremely popular comedy stage plays were 1989’s Bakra Qistoon Pe and Buddha Ghar Pe Ha. Umer Shareef began hosting his late night talk show, The Sharif Show, on Jio TV in October 2009.
Umer Shareef interviewed several actors, entertainers, musicians and politicians on the show. He also appeared as a guest judge on the Indian stand-up comedy show The Great Indian Laughter Challenge alongside Navjot Singh Sidhu and Shekhar Suman. Sharif received the National Award for Best Director and Best Actor in 1992 for Shree 420. He received ten Nigar Awards. Sharif was the only actor to receive four Nigaar Awards in a year. He received three graduation awards. Sharif is also a recipient of the Tamga-e-Imtiaz.
